About the Movie
Stargate: Continuum is the direct-to-DVD feature film that continued Stargate SG-1 after the series ended. As SG-1 attends the extraction of the last Goa’uld system lord, Ba’al, team members begin vanishing — Ba’al’s master plan is already running. The real Ba’al has traveled back to 1939 and sunk the ship carrying the Stargate to America, erasing the entire Stargate program from history.
Mitchell, Carter, and Daniel escape through the gate into the altered timeline: a world where Earth never opened the Stargate, where their counterparts lived different lives, and where Ba’al now rules the galaxy with an armada en route to conquer an Earth that has no defenses and no idea what is coming. With one chance to restore the timeline, the team must survive in a world that considers them insane, and reach a gate that officially does not exist.
Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi
Continuum matters as a case study in how science-fiction franchises learned to live after cancellation: it was part of the wave of direct-to-DVD features that kept beloved series alive, proved there was a paying audience for them, and set a precedent later used by Firefly, Farscape, and others. It also closes the book on SG-1’s defining villain with the kind of time-travel story the show did best — one where the enemy wins first, and history itself is the battlefield. For a franchise that began with the 1994 film (also featured on this site), it is the polished, confident finale of television’s longest-running military sci-fi saga.
