About the Movie
When the first crewed mission to Mars ends in disaster in 2020, a rescue team led by Woody Blake (Tim Robbins) and Jim McConnell (Gary Sinise) races to the red planet to find out what happened — and whether Commander Luke Graham (Don Cheadle) is still alive. What they find on the surface is stranger than a simple accident: evidence that Mars was not always dead.
Directed by Brian De Palma, Mission to Mars (2000) is a big, sincere space procedural built around real NASA hardware ideas, weightless rescue work, and a final act that reaches for wonder instead of explosions. Connie Nielsen and Jerry O’Connell round out a crew forced to make impossible calls millions of miles from home.
Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi
Released the same year as Red Planet, De Palma’s film took the opposite path — less action movie, more meditation on why we go. Its rotating-ship dance sequence, its painstaking orbital mechanics, and its panspermia finale place it in the lineage of 2001 rather than the disaster genre, and it helped revive the serious Mars movie years before The Martian made the formula a hit.
