Kronos (1957) $

About the Movie

A glowing object from space possesses a truck driver, then a respected scientist, Dr. Hubbell Eliot — and nobody at Lab Central notices except that Eliot has started acting very interested in an asteroid that is behaving very strangely. The asteroid crashes into the Pacific off Mexico, and what rises from the sea is not a rock: it is Kronos, a towering machine intelligence sent by an energy-starved alien world to drain Earth’s power — every power station, every bomb, every volt — and grow stronger with each meal.

Dr. Leslie Gaskell (Jeff Morrow) and his team race to understand a weapon that eats the only weapons they have. Atomic missiles just feed it. The more humanity throws at Kronos, the bigger it gets, stomping toward Los Angeles in some of the most striking effects footage of the 1950s B-movie era.

Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi

Kronos is the thinking fan’s giant-monster movie. Directed by Kurt Neumann, it swapped the usual mutant for an elegant nightmare: a machine that turns our own energy grid into its food supply — an idea that reads today like a parable about consumption itself. Its stark, geometric robot design is unforgettable, and the film’s reputation has only grown; this restored HD edition shows why cult audiences never let it go.
