About the Movie
Two years after the robot massacre at Westworld, the Delos corporation reopens with a new park, Futureworld, and invites reporters Chuck Browning and Tracy Ballard to prove it is safe. In Futureworld, guests live out fantasies in simulated environments — chess with living pieces, space missions, Roman decadence — served by robots who look exactly human.
Browning suspects the invitation is a smokescreen, and he is right. Delos is using the park to scan and duplicate its most powerful guests — generals, politicians, world leaders — replacing them with programmable robot copies loyal to the company. Browning and Ballard are next on the duplication list, and the film builds to a hall-of-mirrors climax: two reporters hunted through the park by their own perfect doubles.
Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi
Futureworld matters for three reasons. It was the sequel that expanded Westworld from a single malfunctioning park into a full corporate-conspiracy universe, inventing much of the template the modern Westworld series would later revisit. It features some of the earliest computer-generated imagery of a human face and hand in a feature film — a genuine effects milestone. And its premise, that the real product of a fantasy park is the guests themselves, anticipated modern anxieties about data harvesting and identity with eerie accuracy. The robots were never the point; the copies were.
