Foundation (2021) – TRAILER

About the Show

Twelve thousand years into a Galactic Empire that has ruled for millennia, mathematician Hari Seldon announces the end: his science of psychohistory, which predicts the behaviour of vast populations, shows the Empire falling into a thirty-thousand-year dark age — unless his Foundation, exiled to the barren world of Terminus, preserves human knowledge and shortens the darkness to a single thousand years. The Empire’s cloned emperors — Brother Dawn, Brother Day and Brother Dusk, an endless genetic dynasty of the same man — permit the project rather than make Seldon a martyr, and the series follows the crises his equations foresaw and the people, like mathematician Gaal Dornick and warden Salvor Hardin, caught inside them.

Jared Harris plays Seldon and Lee Pace the icy Brother Day, leading an Apple TV+ production that spends like a film on every episode. Showrunner David S. Goyer restructures Isaac Asimov’s famously plot-driven stories around continuing characters — including the emperor clones, an invention of the show — giving the ideas faces, families and betrayals to live in.

Why This Show Matters to Sci-Fi

Asimov’s Foundation stories are the bedrock of modern science fiction — the template for galactic empires that influenced everything from Dune to Star Wars — and they were considered unfilmable for seventy years: centuries-spanning, idea-led, and short on recurring characters. The series’ achievement is to film them anyway, keeping psychohistory, the fall of civilisations and the violence-versus-knowledge debate at the centre while building genuine television drama around them. It is also a flagship for big-budget literary sci-fi on streaming, proof that the genre’s founding texts can anchor prestige TV.

Where to Watch

The series is not sold on YouTube — it is an Apple Original. Watch the official trailer on YouTube on the Apple TV channel. The full series streams exclusively on Apple TV+.
