About the Movie
2154: Earth is overcrowded, polluted, and poor, while the wealthy have moved to Elysium, a pristine Stanford-torus space station visible in the sky, where medical pods cure any disease in seconds. On Earth, factory worker Max DeCosta (Matt Damon), an ex-con trying to stay straight, is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation. He has five days to live — and the only cure is on the station that people like him are shot down for approaching.
Fitted with a military exoskeleton that gives his dying body the strength to fight, Max agrees to hijack the brain data of a corporate titan — data that turns out to contain a reboot code for Elysium itself, capable of making every person on Earth a citizen with access to its medicine. Elysium’s defense secretary (Jodie Foster) sends her sleeper agent Kruger (Sharlto Copley) to stop him, and Max becomes the one man standing between the station’s perfect order and a revolution downloaded through his skull.
Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi
Neill Blomkamp’s follow-up to District 9 cemented his signature: documentary-textured science fiction where the speculative technology is really about inequality — in Elysium, literally about access to healthcare, gated by orbit. Its visual design, from the favelas of future Los Angeles to the station’s manicured lawns, became one of the most copied looks in 2010s sci-fi and games. As real debates about medical access, borders, and who gets to live where sharpen, Elysium’s blunt metaphor has kept it in the conversation as one of the defining social-allegory films of its decade.
