About the Movie

Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is the heir of House Atreides, ordered by the Emperor to take control of Arrakis — a desert planet that is the only source of the spice melange, the substance that makes interstellar travel possible. Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) knows the gift is a trap: the planet’s previous masters, the brutal Harkonnens, have left sabotage behind, the native Fremen are dismissed as savages by everyone except the Atreides, and beneath the sand swim worms the size of starships. Paul, trained by his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) in the ways of the Bene Gesserit, is having visions of a woman in the desert and a holy war fought in his name.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve and adapting the first half of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, Dune (2021) runs 155 minutes of monumental scale: ornithopters like dragonflies, shields that hum, sandworms that register as weather events. A sequel, Dune: Part Two (2024), completes the novel. David Lynch’s very different 1984 adaptation is noted below in Where to Watch.

Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi

Herbert’s Dune is the best-selling science fiction novel ever written and was long considered unfilmable — too vast, too interior, too strange. Villeneuve’s version proved it could be done at blockbuster scale without sanding off its edges: its politics of empire and resources, its ecology, its engineered religions, and its warning about charismatic leaders all survive intact. It won six Academy Awards and, with its sequel, made serious, adult science fiction a billion-dollar proposition again.

Its influence is already visible in the wave of ambitious, patient, world-dense science fiction that followed. Where Star Wars — itself heavily indebted to Herbert — made space opera a fairy tale, Dune restored it as literature: beautiful, forbidding, and meant to be taken seriously.
