About the Movie
Four friends from Derry, Maine — Jonesy, Henry, Beaver and Pete — share a bond forged in childhood, when they rescued a boy named Duddits from bullies and came away with something extra: a loose, unreliable telepathy that ties them together into adulthood. Twenty-five years later, at a hunting cabin in the snowbound Maine woods, a lost stranger stumbles out of a blizzard carrying something inside him that is not an illness. A storm is coming, the animals are fleeing the forest in one direction, lights are moving in the sky, and a hardline military unit under Colonel Kurtz is sealing off the county.
Lawrence Kasdan directs Stephen King’s novel with an A-list ensemble — Thomas Jane, Jason Lee, Damian Lewis, Timothy Olyphant, Donnie Wahlberg as the grown Duddits and Morgan Freeman as Kurtz, a soldier who has fought this enemy before and intends to win at any cost. The film moves between the friends’ shared memories and a present-day siege, part body horror, part alien-invasion thriller, part story about what boyhood friendship leaves behind in grown men.
Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi
Dreamcatcher is one of the most unusual major-studio alien invasion films ever released: an invasion story told through telepathy, memory palaces and small-town bonds rather than firepower, with the military cast as a second, human menace. It adapts one of King’s strangest novels — written during his recovery from a near-fatal accident, and it shows — and preserves his bleak, bodily take on first contact. Divisive on release, it has settled into cult status as a fascinating outlier: the invasion epic as fever dream, made by the co-writer of The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
