Disclosure Day (2026) $

About the Movie

A Kansas City television meteorologist freezes mid-broadcast, and out of her mouth comes something that is not language — a burst of sound no human throat should make, captured live by millions of phones. Steven Spielberg’s return to the UFO subject follows what happens when the biggest secret in history stops being a secret: governments scrambling, a whistleblower with proof the phenomenon is real and has been hidden for decades, and ordinary people deciding what the truth is worth. Emily Blunt leads the cast as the woman at the centre of the event, with Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo around her.

David Koepp’s screenplay keeps the film grounded in procedure and people rather than spectacle for spectacle’s sake — newsrooms, hearings, families arguing at kitchen tables — while Spielberg stages the uncanny moments with the patience of the man who made Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Released in June 2026, it plays as a companion piece to that film: where Close Encounters asked what contact would feel like for one man, Disclosure Day asks what it does to everyone, all at once, in the age of the livestream.

Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi

Spielberg essentially invented the modern UFO film, and his return to the subject nearly fifty years after Close Encounters is a genre event in itself. Disclosure Day updates the mythology for a world of UAP hearings, declassified Navy videos and a public that no longer trusts official denials — its subject is less the visitors than our institutions, our media and our hunger to know. It also proved, in an era of franchise dominance, that an original, adult science fiction drama from a master filmmaker could still open like a blockbuster.
