About the Show

Amaya is the most powerful tech company on Earth, a quantum-computing giant run from a wooded campus by Forest, a bearded founder who lost his wife and daughter and built a machine to answer for it. When software engineer Sergei is promoted into Amaya’s secretive Devs division, he vanishes within a day — officially a suicide his girlfriend Lily, an encryption specialist at the same company, refuses to accept. Her search pulls her toward the gold-lit lab at the campus’s heart, where a machine hums inside a vacuum-sealed cube and the people who tend it speak like priests.

Alex Garland — Ex Machina, Annihilation — wrote and directed all eight episodes, and Devs is his most concentrated work: a slow, beautiful, deeply unsettling meditation on determinism. Sonoya Mizuno plays Lily opposite Nick Offerman, cast radically against type as Forest, a man who believes the universe runs on tramlines and has spent a fortune proving it. The less you know about what the Devs machine actually does, the better; the series reveals its hand episode by episode until the finale recontextualises everything before it.

Why This Show Matters to Sci-Fi

Devs is the definitive prestige treatment of quantum computing and the many-worlds debate — hard questions about free will, prediction and grief, carried by atmosphere rather than exposition dumps. Garland shoots Silicon Valley as a temple economy, all giant statues and hushed gold light, and asks what happens when a tech founder’s obsession gets unlimited compute. In eight closed episodes it tells a complete story with a beginning, an end and a genuine idea at its centre, which makes it one of the most satisfying self-contained sci-fi series of the streaming era.

Where to Watch

Watch on YouTube (rent or buy) — all eight episodes are available on YouTube Movies & TV. The series also streams on Hulu in the US.
