Altered Carbon (2018) – TRAILER

About the Show

Two hundred and fifty years from now, death has become optional — for the rich. Human consciousness is stored in a cortical “stack” implanted in the spine, and bodies, called sleeves, are interchangeable. Takeshi Kovacs, a former elite soldier, is woken after 250 years in storage and given a new body and an offer he cannot refuse: Laurens Bancroft, one of the near-immortal super-rich known as Meths, has been murdered — or so it appears — and wants Kovacs to find out who did it, in exchange for a pardon and a fortune.

Based on Richard K. Morgan’s novel and created by Laeta Kalogridis, the Netflix series ran two seasons (2018–2020), with Joel Kinnaman playing Kovacs in season one and Anthony Mackie taking over the sleeve in season two. Bay City — a drowned, neon San Francisco of ground slums and towers above the clouds — gives the noir mystery a world as divided as its premise.

Why This Show Matters to Sci-Fi

Altered Carbon brought hard cyberpunk back to television at full scale, and its central device — separating mind from body — lets it ask questions most shows only gesture at: what identity means when your body is rented, what immortality does to empathy, and what a class system looks like when the rich literally never die while the poor can be left on a shelf.

It is also a landmark of streaming-era production: a series budgeted and shot like a feature film, dense with world-building, that trusted viewers to keep up with resleeving, clones, and centuries of backstory. Cyberpunk had been promised on television for decades; this is the show that finally delivered it without flinching.

Where to Watch

The series is a Netflix original and is not sold on YouTube — both seasons stream exclusively on Netflix. Watch the official trailer on YouTube.
