About the Movie
Ares III mission, Mars: a ferocious storm forces the crew to abort and blast off — leaving botanist Mark Watney (Matt Damon) behind, impaled by debris and presumed dead. He wakes up alone on a planet where nothing grows, no rescue can arrive for years, and every system keeping him alive was designed for thirty days.
Watney’s answer is to “science the hell out of it”: grow potatoes in Martian soil fertilized the only way available, burn hydrazine to make water, and jury-rig communication with a buried 1990s probe. On Earth, NASA discovers he is alive and races politics, budgets, and physics to keep him that way, while his crewmates, learning the truth on the long flight home, face a choice between orders and mutiny.
Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi
The Martian revived something the genre badly needed: optimistic, problem-solving science fiction. Adapted from Andy Weir’s novel with heavy NASA consultation, it treated competence as drama — nearly every set piece is an engineering puzzle with a physical answer — and audiences rewarded it enormously, proving in 2015 that original, adult, hard sci-fi could be a global blockbuster without aliens or apocalypses. It is now the modern benchmark for realistic Mars fiction, used in classrooms, and its influence shows in the wave of hopeful, engineering-driven sci-fi that followed it.
