About the Movie
“The Expeditions” opens Ray Bradbury’s Mars saga. In 1999, the first human expeditions reach Mars — and fail, one after another, in ways that say more about the Martians than about the rockets. The Martians, a graceful telepathic civilization already in decline, meet the arrivals not with armies but with illusions: the second expedition finds a perfect replica of a small American town, populated by the astronauts’ own dead loved ones — a welcome too good to be examined, until it is too late.
By the third expedition, the pattern breaks. Captain Wilder (Rock Hudson) finds the earlier crews’ graves and a Martian city emptied not by war but by disease — chickenpox, carried by the first visitors, has done what no weapon could. Humanity will inherit Mars not by conquest but by accident, and the Chronicles begin their real subject: what the settlers will bring with them, and what of Mars will survive it.
Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi
The Martian Chronicles is one of the landmarks of literary science fiction — Bradbury wrote Mars not as a frontier to be mapped but as a mirror for America: colonization, nostalgia, small towns rebuilt on alien soil, and the destruction of an older culture by contact. The 1980 miniseries, scripted by Richard Matheson with Bradbury’s involvement, was a prestige event that brought his elegiac, poetic version of Mars to television at the moment real probes were photographing the planet. Its central warning — that we will take our flaws with us to the stars — underlies nearly every serious Mars story since, including The Expanse and The Martian itself.
