Pitch Black (2000)

About the Movie

A transport ship crash-lands on a desert planet lit by three suns, stranding a handful of survivors — including convicted killer Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel), who can see in the dark. When a total eclipse plunges the planet into blackness, the things that live underground come up to hunt, and the survivors have to trust the most dangerous man among them to lead them through the night.

Directed by David Twohy and co-starring Radha Mitchell and Cole Hauser, Pitch Black (2000) was shot in the Australian outback on a modest budget and became a word-of-mouth hit — launching the Riddick saga and making Diesel a star in the process.

Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi

Pitch Black is a masterclass in doing more with less: one location, one eclipse, one unforgettable anti-hero. It revived the lean creature-feature for a new century, proved an original R-rated sci-fi film could build a franchise from pure craft, and its night-vision aesthetic and moral inversion — the monster as saviour — still echo through the genre.
