About the Movie

Sixty years after a war with alien scavengers shattered the Moon and drove humanity off Earth, technician Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) patrols the ruined planet, repairing the combat drones that guard giant fusion harvesters. With two weeks left before he joins the rest of humanity on Titan, a crashed spacecraft carrying a woman from his dreams turns everything he believes upside down.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski and co-starring Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough and Morgan Freeman, Oblivion (2013) is one of the most beautiful original sci-fi films of its decade — shot in Iceland, built around M83’s soaring score, and unfolding as a mystery as much as an action movie.

Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi

In an era of sequels and shared universes, Oblivion proved a major studio would still back an original, idea-led science fiction film — and make it look this good. Its questions about memory, identity and what makes a person real sit in direct conversation with classics from Dark City to Moon, while its clean design language influenced a decade of screen sci-fi.
