About the Movie
In 2022, convicted soldier John Robbins (Ray Liotta) is sent to Absolom, a jungle island prison with no walls, no guards, and no way off. Two tribes rule the island: the brutal Outsiders led by Walter Marek (Stuart Wilson), and a village of prisoners trying to build something better under a man known as the Father (Lance Henriksen). Robbins has to choose between escape and survival with meaning.
Directed by Martin Campbell — a year before he relaunched Bond with GoldenEye — No Escape (1994), also released as Escape from Absolom, is a lean, physical prison-planet adventure with Ernie Hudson and Kevin Dillon in support. Note this is the 1994 Liotta film, not the 2015 Owen Wilson thriller of the same name.
Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi
The film took the penal-colony future of stories like Escape from New York and stripped out the gadgets, asking what society prisoners build when the state simply walks away. Its two-tribe experiment — tyranny versus community at the end of the world — remains a sharp little thought experiment wrapped inside a very watchable action movie, and Campbell’s staging still holds up.
