About the Show

Oceanic Flight 815 tears apart in mid-air and scatters its survivors across a tropical island that appears on no map. Forty-eight people walk away from a crash nobody should have survived — a doctor, a fugitive, a con man, a lottery winner, a former soldier, a rock star — and the island starts, politely at first, to show them its secrets: a monster moving through the trees, a polar bear in the jungle, a distress signal that has been broadcasting for sixteen years.

Created by J.J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof and Jeffrey Lieber, Lost told its story through flashbacks that turned every survivor into a mystery of their own, and it trusted its audience to keep up. Six seasons, hatch doors, numbers — 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 — and arguments that are still going today. Start with the two-part pilot, one of the most celebrated in television history, and clear your weekend.

Why This Show Matters to Sci-Fi

Lost changed what television could be. It proved a serialized, mythology-driven science fiction series could dominate network TV and the early internet at once — theorizing, freeze-framing and podcasting were practically invented around it. Every mystery-box series since lives in its shadow, and its character-first approach to genre storytelling remains the standard others chase. Love the ending or argue with it forever, there is no modern sci-fi TV without this island.
