Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

About the Movie

Strange seeds drift down through San Francisco’s rain, and soon small pods are flowering where no flowers should be. Health inspector Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland) starts hearing the same complaint from friends and strangers alike: my husband, my wife, my friend — they look the same, but they are not the same person. The accused seem perfectly calm. That is the horror of it. They are calm because the emotion has been replaced along with everything else.

Philip Kaufman’s remake of the 1956 classic moves the paranoia from a small town to a big, distracted city, where nobody has time to notice an invasion. Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum, Veronica Cartwright and Leonard Nimoy form a shrinking circle of the still-human, sleeping in shifts, terrified that closing their eyes means waking up as someone else. The 1956 original — also a masterpiece — is on YouTube Movies too (rent or buy); this 1978 version is the one featured here.

Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi

Few remakes surpass their originals; this one stands beside its. Kaufman turned a Cold War allegory into a timeless one about conformity, loneliness and institutions that smile while they absorb you. Its final scene is one of the most famous shock endings in cinema, and its influence runs through everything from The Thing to modern pod-people stories across film and TV.
