About the Movie

A meteor struck a lighthouse on the Gulf Coast, and around it grew the Shimmer — an expanding, iridescent zone where light refracts, radio dies, and expedition teams do not come back. Lena (Natalie Portman), a biologist and former soldier, joins an all-women team — psychologist Dr. Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh), paramedic Anya (Gina Rodriguez), physicist Josie (Tessa Thompson), and geologist Cass — walking into Area X to reach the lighthouse and learn what happened to the previous team, which included Lena’s husband (Oscar Isaac), who returned home changed and dying.

Written and directed by Alex Garland from Jeff VanderMeer’s novel, the film runs 115 minutes through a landscape of impossible flowers, refracted animals, and things wearing familiar shapes wrongly. It explains very little, on purpose, and its final movement is among the most unsettling sequences in modern science fiction.

Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi

Annihilation brought literary, ambiguous “new weird” science fiction to the screen without sanding it down — a film about self-destruction, grief, and change that trusts images over exposition. Garland stages dread the way few directors can: beautiful, quiet, and wrong, building to a bear scene and a lighthouse confrontation that entered the genre’s permanent memory on release.

Denied a wide international theatrical run, it still became one of the most debated and re-watched science fiction films of its decade, proof that audiences will follow a difficult film if the difficulty is the point. It is also one of the great films about grief and depression disguised as an expedition: every woman on the team walks into the Shimmer carrying something she cannot set down, and the zone’s particular horror is that it hands it back to her changed.
