Blake’s 7 (1978) – TRAILER

About the Show

Roj Blake is a political dissident who was brainwashed by the Terran Federation, tried on trumped-up charges, and sentenced to a penal colony at the edge of known space. En route, his prison ship encounters a derelict alien vessel of extraordinary power — the Liberator — and Blake seizes it. With a small, fractious crew gathered around him — the smuggler Jenna, the thief Vila, the telepath Cally, the computer expert Avon, and the ship’s enigmatic computer Zen — Blake sets out to strike back at the Federation that framed him. The catch is that almost nobody aboard actually believes in his cause.

Created by Terry Nation, the man who created the Daleks, the BBC series ran four seasons from 1978 to 1981 on famously tiny budgets. What it lacked in effects it made up in writing: Avon (Paul Darrow), the cold, self-interested computer genius, gradually steals the show from its hero, and the Federation’s commander Servalan (Jacqueline Pearce) became one of British television’s great villains. The series ends with one of the most famously bleak finales ever broadcast.

Why This Show Matters to Sci-Fi

Blake’s 7 was the anti-Star Trek: a future ruled not by a benevolent federation of explorers but by a corrupt Federation that drugs its citizens and rules by fear, fought by rebels who argue, betray, and fail. That moral murk — heroes who are criminals, a resistance that loses as often as it wins — was years ahead of its time and runs straight through to Babylon 5, Farscape, Firefly, and the reimagined Battlestar Galactica.

It also proved that science fiction television lives or dies on characters, not budgets. Cardboard sets and wobbly effects are still forgiven fifty years on because Avon and Vila’s sparring, and that devastating final episode, have never been forgotten by anyone who saw them.

Where to Watch

The series is not sold on YouTube — all four seasons stream on BritBox. Watch the official trailer on YouTube (BBC Studios, for the restored Blu-ray collection).
