The X-Files (1993) $

About the Show

FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) believes: his sister vanished when he was a child, and he has devoted his career to the bureau’s X-Files — cases involving the paranormal that no one else will touch. The bureau assigns him a partner, Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), a doctor and physicist sent to debunk his work. Instead, case by case — mutants, monsters, government conspiracies, and lights in the sky — the skeptic becomes the believer’s strongest ally, and the reports she writes to discredit him become the record of everything they find.

Created by Chris Carter, the series ran nine seasons from 1993 to 2002, plus two feature films and a two-season revival in 2016–2018. Its rhythm became famous: standalone “monster of the week” episodes, many of them television classics, woven through a mythology arc about alien colonization and a conspiracy reaching into the highest levels of government — embodied by the Cigarette Smoking Man and sealed with the words “Trust No One.”

Why This Show Matters to Sci-Fi

The X-Files changed what television could be. It brought cinematic production values and season-long serialization to a network procedural, proved a genre show could anchor a network’s biggest night, and built one of the first great internet fandoms while the internet was still young. Scully’s effect was measurable in the real world: a generation of women credited her example for choosing careers in science and medicine.

Its influence is everywhere — in Fringe, Supernatural, Lost, and every series since that has balanced weekly cases against a deepening mythology. “The truth is out there” became a cultural catchphrase because the show earned it, week after week, for a decade.
