About the Show
In a London junkyard in 1963, two schoolteachers follow a strange pupil home and find a police telephone box that is vastly bigger on the inside than out — and an irascible old man who calls himself the Doctor. He is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, an exile traveling through all of time and space in a stolen ship, the TARDIS, whose camouflage circuit broke while disguised as a police box and never got fixed. He takes human companions along, partly for company and partly, one suspects, because wonder is better shared.
The show’s masterstroke arrived by necessity: when its first star’s health failed, the writers gave the Doctor the ability to regenerate — to cheat death by renewing his body with a new face and a new personality. That single idea has carried the series across six decades and well over a dozen lead actors, from the original run (1963–1989) through the revived series that began in 2005. Along the way the Doctor has faced Daleks, Cybermen, the renegade Time Lord called the Master, and history itself, in stories that mix the far future with Earth’s past.
Why This Show Matters to Sci-Fi
Doctor Who is the longest-running science fiction series in the world, and its influence hides in plain sight. It began as a family program meant to teach history and science, and it proved that a television show could change its lead actor, its tone, and its era and remain itself — a format so flexible it can tell any story in any genre, from haunted houses to the end of the universe, on a BBC budget.
Regeneration also made the show a cultural relay race: each generation gets its own Doctor, and the argument over which one is best is practically a rite of passage. Few institutions in the genre have welcomed so many viewers through the door — or kept that door, a small blue box, open for so long.
