About the Movie

Captain Malcolm Reynolds and the crew of the transport ship Serenity take whatever work the edge of the Alliance’s reach provides — some of it honest. Their passengers have become family: Dr. Simon Tam and his sister River, a brilliant, damaged young woman the Alliance experimented on and now wants back at any cost. When an Alliance operative with no name and unlimited authority begins methodically closing every door the crew has ever used, Mal has to decide what he believes in, and the trail leads to Miranda — a planet that officially does not exist, holding the truth about the Reavers, the savage raiders who haunt the rim.

Joss Whedon, who created the television series Firefly, writes and directs the film to work twice: as a self-contained space western for newcomers, and as the conclusion the series never got to film. The Miranda revelation re-frames everything the show hinted about the Reavers and about what the Alliance’s good intentions can do. At 1 hour 59 minutes the film is leaner and harder than the series — funnier than its subject should allow, and more willing to spend its characters. It ties off the story of Serenity’s crew with an ending that earns its losses.

Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi

Serenity exists because the audience refused to accept a cancellation. Firefly was cancelled by Fox after a single mis-scheduled season, but its DVD sales were extraordinary, and the fan campaign by the self-named Browncoats convinced Universal to complete the story as a feature film — a resurrection with almost no precedent in the industry. The film became the standing proof that a “failed” series can be an unfinished success.

It also remains the genre’s benchmark for what fan loyalty can build, and a permanent argument that a show’s worth is measured by the people who keep flying with it. Every crowd-funded revival and streaming rescue since has walked the trail Serenity cut.
