About the Movie

2019 — as imagined in 1987: America is a totalitarian state where the public is pacified by television, and the number-one show is The Running Man, in which convicted criminals flee for their lives against flamboyant, costumed executioners called Stalkers, live on air. Ben Richards (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a police pilot framed for a massacre he refused to commit, is the show’s newest contestant.

Host Damon Killian (Richard Dawson, playing a monstrous version of his own game-show persona) expects a three-hour execution. Instead, Richards starts winning — killing the Stalkers, winning the crowd, and linking up with an underground resistance that wants to hijack the broadcast and show the public the truth about their government. The game is rigged, the footage is fake, and the only way out is to take over the show itself.

Why This Movie Matters to Sci-Fi

Very loosely adapted from a Stephen King novel (written as Richard Bachman), The Running Man is one of the most prophetic films of the 1980s about television itself. It foresaw reality TV, trial-by-media, doctored footage, and entertainment built on real suffering, packaging it all inside a Schwarzenegger action vehicle with jokes. Dawson’s Killian remains one of the great media satires ever performed. In an age of livestreamed everything, the film’s vision of a population governed through a screen looks less like dystopia and more like a schedule listing — which is precisely its importance.
